E46s are great first cars, shouldn't be hard to maintain and parts are easy to find if something breaks. That one has fairly high mileage though so I can't comment on reliability. But I wouldn't trust the clutch switch thing, as far as I know it's a switch behind the pedal that tells the car the clutch pedal is pushed in. Without it, your car won't start. I'd try to find an already running one with less miles.
