After my first HPDE all my buddies that got me into the whole grip driving thing asked what was more fun or what I liked better having come from years of drifting. I couldn’t really answer back then and I still can’t. They both have their ups and downs, they both cost roughly the same for a track weekend and they both have pretty similar overall seat time per event. Drifting is super fun and super satisfying when you are doing a tandem run with your friends and you both have really close proximity, clean transitions, good speed, and nail the proper line. Grip driving is super fun and super satisfying when you absolutely nail the racing line and put down a good lap time and even moreso when you’re running with other friends on track and have awesome lead-follow laps.
I will say having drift experience definitely makes you a better grip driver because you will have more confidence in the car and your driving ability, know the limits of its grip levels a lot better, and you have a better chance to save yourself from some situations that others would completely lose it in.
At the end of the day I personally would pick drifting only because thats how I got started in motorsports and its just what I’m more comfortable and knowledgable with as far as technique and vehicle setup but I still love me some grip driving and will continue doing it between drift events as long as I can afford both.
